Kolkata Knight Riders sign Jason Roy for IPL 2023

In a surprising turn of events, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed English opener Jason Roy for the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a replacement for Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladeshi all-rounder had to leave the tournament due to national duties.

Jason Roy’s contract details

As per IPL’s media release, Jason Roy signed a deal of INR 2.8 crore (£ 2,73,50) for the season from his base price of INR 1.5 crore.

Nitish Rana to lead KKR

KKR’s regular skipper Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the ongoing season due to injury, and Nitish Rana will lead the team throughout IPL 2023.

Jason Roy’s recent form

Jason Roy was left out of England’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad, which England later won, but he made a dashing comeback by scoring a century in the ODI format. He also played exceptionally well during England’s tour of Bangladesh and in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2023), scoring two centuries in three matches.

Jason Roy has amassed 1522 runs in 62 T20I matches for England at a strike rate of 137.61. He has also scored 4271 runs in 116 ODI matches for England.

IPL

Jason Roy has previously played for Gujarat Lions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He has scored 329 runs in 13 matches, including two half-centuries and no centuries.

Most of Jason Roy’s matches in IPL 2023 will be played at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, which is more pace-friendly than other grounds.

KKR’s upcoming match

After losing to Punjab, KKR will play their next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Kolkata on Thursday. It is unclear if Jason Roy will be available for the match.
